MY EXPERIENCE
PEER TUTOR, CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING
September 2018 - Present
I tutor the following courses in the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at TAMUQ:
- Foundations of Engineering with Python 3.0
- Mechanics
- Electricity and Magnetism
As a peer tutor, I:
- Assist my peers in developing a clear understanding of concepts in the said courses
- Encourage peers to adopt smart and creative approaches to problem solving
- Motivate and assist peers to recover from poor in-class performance
- Act as unofficial mentors to some peers
Apart from these, my responsibilities include additional administrative duties. I also assist in planning and organising various CTL events throughout the semester, such as, Teaching Week, Semester De-stresser etc.
The biggest challenge in this job is that I cannot use the same technique for every client. Each student is different from another one. I always have to come up with innovative strategies to approach each client. This, however, is improving my communication skills as the tone of interaction is different in each session. I have also become more flexible with my approach and adapt to my client's situation empathetically.
